Bill Curotto “Mr. C”

1/7/1937 – 10/7/2008

Bill Curotto believed the Bon-Aire was far more than bricks and mortar—it was a place where families could slow down, enjoy the Florida sun, and form friendships that often lasted a lifetime. Born January 7, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois, Bill moved with his family to St. Pete Beach in 1950. Just three years later, his parents built the Bon-Aire Motel, laying the foundation for what would become both a beloved family business and a cherished destination for generations of guests.

Growing up alongside an entrepreneurial father, Bill learned early the value of hard work, hospitality, and community. He attended St. Leo High School and Admiral Farragut Academy before serving his country in the United States Marine Corps, completing his service at Quantico, Virginia. After returning home, Bill worked side by side with his father at the Bon-Aire Motel and eventually assumed full-time operations. Carrying forward his father’s entrepreneurial spirit, Bill pursued additional ventures on St. Pete Beach, including a car rental business, a gas station, and the Emm & Cee Pasta Seafood Grille—all of which he later sold.

Bill was instrumental in expanding the Bon-Aire during the 1970s with the purchase of the El-Jomar Motel, now the south building, and the construction of the Gulf Building. In 1990, he built Sandbar Bill’s Bar and Grille, which has since become a staple beach bar on St. Pete Beach. Through financial downturns, oil crises, tropical storms, and hurricanes, Bill guided the Bon-Aire with resilience, humor, and determination.

Above all else, Bill was devoted to his family, friends, and guests. Known for his wit, charm, and unmistakable personality, he made everyone feel welcome, whether they were first-time visitors or returning year after year. In his later years, Bill found great joy in golfing, boating, and spending time with his family, while remaining a constant presence around the motel he loved. After a battle with pancreatic cancer, he passed away on October 7, 2008, surrounded by his loved ones.

To honor Bill’s rich and distinguished life, our family wanted to highlight the lasting impact he had on our lives, the St. Pete Beach community, and in shaping the Bon-Aire into what it is today. Below, you will find many photos of Bill alongside guests and friends – moments that capture the spirit he brought to this special place. The Bon-Aire Motel will always embody his warmth, humor, and love of hospitality. Our family remains devoted to continuing the traditions and history he and his father began on St. Pete Beach in 1953.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Bon-Aire Motel and sharing treasured memories and creating new ones for years to come.

With love and appreciation,

The Curotto Family
